If you've been to an arena show in the last decade and thought "I can actually hear the words," you are standing inside a fifty-year-old argument. The argument is older than the venue. It started in 1966 in a Berkeley lab under the railroad tracks and ends, for now, inside the Sphere in Las Vegas. The people who built it are the same people, or were trained by the same people, all the way down.
This page is the canonical reference for that lineage. The newsletter version (issue-21) tells the story; this page draws the diagram. Four hardware eras, four sets of choices, one through-line: treat the PA as a precision instrument, not a megaphone.

Era 1 — Bear's DIY rigs (1966–1972)
The first dedicated rock PA systems weren't bought; they were built. Owsley Stanley ("Bear") — already famous for other reasons — treated live sound as an extension of his chemistry practice: each component had to be tested, each signal path had to be measurable, and each default had to be questioned.
The configuration was less a "system" than a set of rules:
- Stereo and multi-channel live mix when nearly every other touring act was still mono.
- On-stage monitoring so the band could play off each other rather than off the house mix.
- No-EQ philosophy — fix problems at the source (mic choice, mic placement, room) instead of carving the signal at the desk.
- Constructive leakage — fewer mics, better placed, less phase cancellation between them.
- Systematic recording — the "sonic journals" that became the corpus now held at the Owsley Stanley Foundation.
This was the era that established the method, not the hardware. Every later Bear-era choice traces back to these five rules. The hardware was off-the-shelf hi-fi repurposed for stage use; the engineering was new.
Era 2 — The Wall of Sound (1973–1974)
In 1973, Bear and the Dead decided that buying a normal PA was beneath them. They built one the size of a building.
The Wall of Sound was, by the technical record:
- 586 JBL loudspeakers (a mix of K130, 120, and E130 15-inch drivers; 075 ring-radiators; LE175 horn tweeters) — a per-instrument column layout, not a stack.
- 54 Electro-Voice tweeters for the high end.
- 48 McIntosh MC2300 power amplifiers, each rated at 300 watts per channel into 4 ohms, for a total raw power of 28,800 watts.
- Cubic-root-of-2 scaled sealed cabinets for time-alignment across the audience.
- Differential microphone pairs for the vocal channel: matched condenser capsules (Brüel & Kjær) spaced ~60mm apart, wired in reverse polarity, summed through a differential amplifier so common-mode PA spill canceled — leaving only the close-mic vocal. Singers had to work inches from the mic for the technique to function.
- Phil Lesh quadraphonic bass — full per-string channel split, reducing intermodulation distortion in the low end.
The Wall is the most documented failure in rock audio history, and the most influential. It could not tour economically — the truck fleet required to move it cost the band roughly $100,000 a month at 1974 prices — and it was retired in October 1974, after one year of operation. Every engineer who worked on it learned something they could not have learned anywhere else.
One of those engineers was John Meyer.
Era 3 — Post-Wall Alembic carry-over (1975–early 1980s)
When the Wall came down, the Alembic mods that had made the McIntosh MC2300s performable did not. The same hand-matched 2N5303 output transistors, Sentry Monitor defeats, and oversized filter capacitors that defined the Wall's power section continued to appear in Dead and JGB rigs through the late 1970s and into the early 1980s.
The configuration during this era was:
- Post-Wall MC2300/Alembic mods carried into custom split-amplification rack rigs.
- Use cases — club and theater Dead shows, national tours, the Jerry Garcia Band's Club Front rehearsals, and the deeper JGB run that ran through 1977–1978.
- Transition phase — the early Meyer Sound collaborations appear here. The first UM-1 UltraMonitor prototypes were tested against the Alembic-modded McIntosh reference; this is the period where the post-Wall rig and the pre-Meyer-Sound company co-existed in the same PA.
This is the era most likely to be skipped in the public story, because nothing in it was as visually dramatic as the Wall. But it is the era where the engineering decisions crystallized into products. The reason Meyer Sound's first commercial loudspeaker sounded the way it did is that it was measured against a rig Alembic had been refining since 1973.
Era 4 — Meyer Sound and the line-array era (1979–present)
John Meyer founded Meyer Sound Laboratories in 1979 in Berkeley, six blocks from Bear's old lab. The company's first commercial product, the UM-1 UltraMonitor (with its patented low-distortion horn), was a direct descendant of the differential-microphone and per-instrument-column thinking that defined the Wall.
The lineage, in four steps:
- Trapezoidal cabinets (1979) — the first Meyer enclosures were designed to be arrayed without the lobing comb-filter artifacts that plagued rectangular cabinets.
- Self-powered loudspeakers (1980s) — Meyer was the first major manufacturer to put amplification inside the cabinet, eliminating the long unregulated cable run between amp and driver.
- Processor-controlled systems (1990s) — the Meyer SIM (Source Independent Measurement) system let touring engineers measure and correct the system in the room, every night, before doors. This is the direct descendant of Bear's "test it before you use it" rule, automated.
- Curvilinear arraying and cardioid subwoofers (2000s) — the technology that makes modern festival stages possible.
The Dead's touring systems evolved through this catalog in lockstep. By the 1993–1995 final-tour era, Garcia's rig was running Meyer MSL-10 and MSL-3 loudspeakers with Alembic Custom FE preamps — a configuration that the corpus documents in the appendix's table of "shows and eras."
The most recent expression is the Sphere itself. The PANTHER linear-array system, designed and built by Meyer Sound, was deployed for Dead & Company's 2015 Sphere residency and the 2023 Final Tour. The Bear-Sphere line, drawn as a single piece of hardware, would run: Bear's 1966 hi-fi repurposing → Wall of Sound (1974) → Alembic-modded McIntosh carryover → UM-1 → MSL-10 → PANTHER at the Sphere.
The through-line, in one sentence
Treat the PA as a precision instrument. Test it before you use it. Fix the room physically before you carve the signal. Measure the result every night. And build the next generation of people who will continue to do this.
That sentence is Owsley Stanley's, restated by John Meyer, restated by every touring engineer who has loaded a measurement microphone into a venue since 1979. It is the spine of the Dead's most under-credited invention. It is also the spine of every arena concert you have ever been to.

From the Equipment appendix, the passages most sensitive to the four eras:
- Phil Lesh's quad bass lines — Cornell 5/8/77 (Betty Board); compare Wall-era 6/22/74 (Miami) with 1977's "Help on the Way > Slipknot!" bass.
- Garcia's clean solos — "Eyes of the World" 5/11/77 vs. 5/19/74 Portland; focus on attack, decay, and high-string clarity.
- Full-band crescendos and sharp transients — "The Other One" 4/29/71, with the MC2300/Wall array; listen for hi-hat and snare definition during jams.
- Vocal sibilance and feedback — "Morning Dew" 5/8/77; assess how vocal sibilance and slight feedback artifacts behave on the MC3500 tube PA vs. the MC2300 solid-state Wall.
These are the corpus-named passages. They are not recommendations; they are what the appendix says to listen for if you want to hear the hardware difference yourself.
What this article is not
This page is not the story. It is the reference underneath the story. The story — Bear as the engineer, the Wall as the science project, Meyer as the inheritor — is in issue-21. Read that first. Then come back here for the diagram.
It is also not a complete history. The corpus has specific configuration details for the 1973–1974, 1975–early-1980s, 1978–1980s, and 1993–1995 eras. There are gaps between them, especially in the late 1980s, where the appendix is silent. The Bear–Sphere line is real; the line is also unevenly documented. If a future edition of the corpus fills those gaps, this page should be updated to match.
