SET I — Cold Open: Garcia the Painter

Jerry Garcia made visual art as well as music.

He attended San Francisco’s California School of Fine Arts—later the San Francisco Art Institute—and sources on artist Wally Hedrick identify Hedrick as one of Garcia’s teachers. The connection places Garcia near a formative Bay Area art scene; it does not need a grander origin story to matter.

Before the guitar became his public language, drawing and painting were already part of his life.

SET I — Act Two: Art School in Beat San Francisco

Garcia attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, later the San Francisco Art Institute. The school sat inside the Bay Area’s mid-century art world, the same broad milieu in which Hedrick worked as an artist and educator.

It establishes the setting without pretending that a classroom can explain everything Garcia later made of music.

SET II — Wally Hedrick and the Bay Area Scene

One of Garcia’s teachers was Wally Hedrick, a Bay Area artist and educator closely associated with early San Francisco counterculture. Hedrick helped organize the 1955 Six Gallery Reading, a defining Beat-era event.

The teacher-student connection and the setting are real. They do not need to become a neat causal story about where the Grateful Dead came from.

SET II — The Work: Five Media, One Habit

The surviving visual record includes drawings, watercolors, oil and acrylic paintings, and etchings. The Arts Unlimited catalogue documents the first four categories directly. Its etching documentation says Garcia drew the plates, while Roberta Weir prepared them and Weir Gallery editioned the prints.

That establishes Weir Gallery as a printmaking collaborator, not as proof of an early solo exhibition. What remains is already interesting: Garcia made work in several media, and some of it entered a formal printmaking process rather than staying in a private sketchbook.

DRUMS/SPACE — The Same Philosophy, Three Surfaces

The paintings, the solos, and the modified guitars make a tempting three-part theory of Garcia. It remains a theory. The verified record is narrower and better: Garcia worked across sound, image, and instrument design, and his visual work was materially varied enough to stand on its own.

ENCORE — The Rex Foundation

Garcia’s own visual practice is the subject here. The Rex Foundation’s broader arts support is real, but it does not prove a direct extension of Garcia’s painting practice, so it does not need to carry this conclusion.
