SET I — Cold Open: A Few Rows Behind

He was flying home from Boston after his first Grateful Dead show, still mostly tripping, when he heard someone a few rows back talking about the concert.

He turned around.

"Hey, were you at the show last night?"

It was Jerry.

The kid said yes. Said he thought they were great. Asked how they made so many people happy all at the same time — the only other people he had seen do that were Bob Marley and Springsteen. Jerry kept saying thank you, thank you. The kid thanked him for playing "The Wheel," called it his favorite song, and asked which album it was on.

Jerry said he did not know.

Billy chimed in from nearby: they don't make that record anymore.

Jerry asked if he was going to the New York shows. The kid was not sure. Jerry told him he should really go.

"You should really go, man. We jam in the big apple."

A Reddit poster writing as VillageTrue2443 put those lines on the public net under his own handle. An earlier tell of the same flight, signed 091882, lands on the same invitation and the same skyline cheer. That is the claim this piece will carry from him. One commercial flight. One first show. One sentence pointing east.

SET I — Act One: What the Books Will Carry Without Him

I am not inventing which Boston night put "The Wheel" in the second set.

What the public floor will hold without the plane story is narrower and harder. JerryGarcia.com, dead.net, and JerryBase keep Saturday, September 18, 1982, at Boston Garden: Jack Straw into Sugaree to open, Dupree's and Cassidy before the break, then Samson, Uncle John's into Playing, Drums, Space, Throwing Stones into The Wheel into Truckin' into Wharf Rat, Around and Around, One More Saturday Night, Baby Blue for the encore. The Wheel sits right there in the middle of the second set, where a kid on a Sunday flight could still be hearing it.

The poster dated his first show September 19. The Boston Garden book is the 18th. I am leaving that stub as his memory against the shelf. What the setlists will carry without him is Saturday night in the old Garden with The Wheel already played, and Madison Square Garden waiting two days later.

JerryBase and JerryGarcia.com keep the New York book clean. Monday, September 20, 1982, Madison Square Garden — Shakedown into Minglewood, Scarlet into Fire, Terrapin, a Spanish Jam, Stella Blue, Touch of Grey for the encore, later boxed as part of In and Out of the Garden. Tuesday the 21st opens Playing into Crazy Fingers and closes the run with U.S. Blues. That is the Big Apple Jerry was pointing at from the aisle.

SET I — Act Two: The Card, the Heineken, the Skyline

The longer tell fills the cabin.

It was the pilot's final flight, so they passed a card around for his retirement. The kid put his name right under Jerry's. He tapped Brent on the shoulder to make him sign — Brent had Walkman headphones on. Phil was drinking a Heineken. When the flight attendant did the seat-belt demo and said insert, Phil stood up and made a joke with his hands that the kid still remembered decades later.

Jerry got up for the bathroom, came back down the aisle, and gave him a thumbs-up. The kid returned it.

On the way into Newark, past the New York skyline, the whole band stood up at the tiny windows, clapping and whooping, saying fuck yeah. The kid thought they must have a really good time in New York.

He followed them off the plane. Nobody noticed them. His mother was parked at the curb behind their bus. He got in and said, Mom, I just met the Grateful Dead.

She said, That's nice, son.

Those sentences are his. The MSG dates are the public shelf they sit on.

SET II — Same Calendar, West Coast Boards

Eleven days before that Boston Saturday, Jerry's other payroll was still in San Francisco.

September 7, 1982. The Stone. Jerry Garcia and John Kahn — two chairs, no drums, Deep Elem into All Around This World, Valerie, Dire Wolf, Friend of the Devil, Simple Twist, Run for the Roses; then Train to Cry, Little Sadie, Bird Song, Jack-A-Roe, Gomorrah into Ain't No Lie, Ripple; Reuben and Cherise for the encore. JerryGarcia.com still prints the set that way.

That night is not the Garden. It is not the plane. It is Jerry and Kahn on the same September calendar the East Coast run was about to open, playable on this site without leaving.

DRUMS/SPACE — Invitation, Book, Curb

Three documents again.

A named first-person flight: The Wheel, a missing album credit, an invitation to jam in the big apple, a skyline cheer, a mother who said that's nice.

A Boston Garden book for September 18, 1982, with The Wheel already in the second set, and Madison Square Garden on the 20th and 21st waiting with the official pages still open.

A Stone duo set eleven days earlier, Jerry and Kahn, Deep Elem to Ripple, still on the tape shelf here.

The plane does not prove September 18. September 18 does not prove the thumbs-up in the aisle. They sit next to each other the way Goldberg's side-door thank-you sat next to an early Winterland book — separate papers, same attention paid. A kid asked if New York was worth it. Jerry said go. The band played the Garden two nights later. The kid told his mother. She believed him just enough to be polite.

ENCORE — What to Play

If you want the night that put The Wheel under the kid's seat for the flight home, start with September 18, 1982, at Boston Garden — Throwing Stones into The Wheel into Truckin'. The official pages are easy to find. If you want the Big Apple Jerry pointed at from the aisle, September 20 and 21 at Madison Square Garden; Monday is in the In and Out of the Garden box.

On this site, the playable night from that same September stretch is September 7, 1982 — Jerry Garcia and John Kahn at The Stone, Deep Elem into a short duo set that ends on Ripple and Reuben. Press play there if you want Jerry's other band on the calendar before Boston. VillageTrue2443's full post is still on Reddit under People Who Met Jerry. The earlier tell under 091882 is still in the How many of you have met Jerry thread. The invitation is still in both. So is the skyline. So is that's nice, son.
